My personal journey started with reiki in 2014, or even before I did my my official training with Johann van Greunen Specialist Wellness Counsellor & Reiki Master training. I have personally gone for all kinds of ‘New Age’ therapies before I discovered reiki and decide to become a practitioner due to the ultimate blissful experience and the great effect it had on lowering my own stress and anxiety.
Being a born nurturer, I studied somatology, this line of work took me into spas and skincare clinics, where massage and body work is key. I have always loved working on the physical body and aiding pain relief and easing stiff and sore muscles felt really rewarding. However, I’ve always found that there is so much more to getting your body worked, there is a subtle emotional (or sometimes not so subtle) release that almost always happens, and I wanted to know more on how to work with this.
Let me share with you some of the proven benefits and the frequently asked questions about this amazing therapy.
How This Type of Energy Healing Works, and Its Health Benefits.
The technique may help reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and lessen pain through light (or no) touch.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is an energy healing technique that involves a Reiki practitioner using gentle hand movements to guide the flow of healthy energy (what’s known in Reiki as “life force energy”) through the body to reduce stress and promote healing. Reiki is a form of complementary medicine; there’s evidence it can reduce daily stress and help with management of some chronic diseases.
What are the health benefits of Reiki?
Reiki is linked to a range of physical and emotional health benefits, including better sleep, improved mood, and pain relief. Research suggests Reiki helps your body return to a state of relaxation, which allows it to heal from damage brought on by stress, injury, or disease. There’s evidence that Reiki, used as a complementary therapy with other standard medical techniques, can help people recover after surgery and manage symptoms of cancer and AIDS.
What happens during a Reiki session?
During a session, a Reiki practitioner will gently move their hands above or close to the body in a series of positions. Each hand position focuses on a different part of the body — including the head, shoulders, stomach, and feet — and is held for roughly 3 to 10 minutes, depending on the person’s needs. There is very little to no talking during sessions, which typically last between 60 and 90 minutes.
What Is Reiki and How Does the Energy Therapy Work?
Reiki therapy is a way of guiding energy throughout the body to promote the recipient’s self-healing abilities, according to the National Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). The Reiki practitioner doesn’t cause the healing, nor are they the source of that healing energy; they’re a channel for the energy — similar to the way a garden hose acts as a channel for water.
The reiki practitioner is an open channel, and our clients body takes that energy and does whatever it needs with it.
The word “Reiki” is a combination of two Japanese words: “rei,” which means “God’s wisdom,” or “the higher power,” and “ki,” which means “life force energy.
Reiki is taught according to the Japanese tradition of the teacher who passes the knowledge to the student through attunement, an initiation ceremony that is thought to open the student’s energy channels to facilitate the flow of healing energy, once open, these channels remain open for the rest of your life.
Reiki is a spiritual practice, like meditation is a spiritual practice. Reiki, despite its spiritual components and roots, may be and is often used therapeutically including in a secular way. It is not a religion and is not associated with religious practice.
I often find when working with the same client for a number of sessions that the energy flows more easily as they feel relaxed and familiar in what to expect and how I conduct a session. In my opinion this is great, as being relaxed when receiving reiki just makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable. Like previously stated though reiki will flow absolutely where its needed, so even if you are a bit sceptical, it is worth a try.
